Newcastle Public Schools Job Posting Position: Custodian
Job Summary: The Building Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in school facilities. This position supports the overall operation of the district by ensuring classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and grounds are properly maintained.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, and other areas as assigned.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect surfaces regularly.
Empty trash and recycling containers and ensure proper disposal.
Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, and reporting needed repairs.
Assist with event setup and takedown (e.g., furniture, equipment, chairs, tables).
Monitor building security and safety (locking/unlocking doors, reporting hazards).
Operate cleaning equipment such as buffers, vacuums, and floor scrubbers.
Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and request reorders when needed.
Assist with snow/ice removal and basic groundskeeping as assigned.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred but not required.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, climb, and perform repetitive motions.
Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes under varying weather conditions.

Work Schedule:
Full-time, 260-day contract.
Schedule may include evenings or weekends as required.
